How free software has come to sux ?

 I remember free software used to be fun and local. I would say like peasantly pleasant.

We were amazed by how much it would make our « old computers » raise from the dead whereas bros with expensive hardware were stuck with a huge learning curve to do in years what we could do fast.

In my years of coding I learnt one thing : the importance of not building frameworks, but to focus on solving small problem fast and, eventually to draw.

#!/usr/bin/bash
chr() { [[ $1 == 0 ]] && echo -n \0 || printf \\$(printf '%03o' $1) ; }
W=$( cut -d "," -f 1 /sys/class/graphics/fb0/virtual_size )
H=$( cut -d "," -f 2 /sys/class/graphics/fb0/virtual_size )
S=$(( $( cat /sys/class/graphics/fb0/stride ) / $W ))

echo -n $( chr 65 )
echo $( chr 80 )

    echo "$@";
    exit 1;
}
[[ "$S" == 4 ]] || die "ça va pas marcher"

    for ((x=0;x<W;x++)); do
        echo -n $( chr $(( x % 255)) )$( chr $(( y%255)) )$( chr $(( ( x + y ) % 255 )) )$( chr 255)

I always loved the fact that if you focus on doing something with all the tools you have and have no « religion » you can go fast on linux, hacking like a brute your way to a result in very few "lines of code".

I used to be a perl monger, go to linux user group, and computing was funnier when it was making relationships between users and without ... gatekeeping.

I do blame linux and the notoriety brought to free software by big corporation to be the problem. Most big companies loves free code and are lousy contributors on more than one level.

But, well, the real matter is not the strength of the companies but the weakness of the community.

First of all, what is the community made of today ?

People craving for fame. Because most free software are poors, while a few one get all the bucks.

If we don't discuss the awesome contributors begging for money to do great work while some incompetent know all but do nothing are living in luxury we are missing something here.

There is a struggle in this community that revolves about gatekeeping and gaslighting. It pretty obvious to me now, that the great offenders are the same responsible  for toxicity in information technology : the bro coders.

There are not only the shiny brod dudes of web3.0 and crypto shit, they are also and most often the well educated from the Ivy League and university alike. They made a hell of the community by imposing their standards.

Coding and getting the job done is not what matters nowadays. It is mostly how you dissert on it, present it, make it available to the community. Free software as become as flawed as public research. People don't want to share their work, they want the fame of being noticed, even project that are already famous steal other people's code without attributing the paternity. I am very disturbed when I check on a python binding on libmagick to discover the « guenine code » from the libmacick python module is posterior to another one, with a different licence, and no attribution. It actually sickens me to see a project already famous doing that to a small contributor doing its job correctly.

I do not count the number of time like in the log4j case coders that are never supported are bullied into working for free and almost insulted. That's the day I am so fucking glad I am not notorious enough to have my code used. People seem to think they have a right to not care of developers state poverty and boss them around for their selfish interests of shining in their own organization.

Well, fuck you the wealthy stinky guys.

Also, you see, I don't like ALL major geeky news website doing a ban on political or polemic topic. There should be a lot of discussion about political outcome of computer usage.

From what is the actual contribution to climate change of our use of computers and the infrastructure they require (electricity does not come magically) to bias in dataset that are then propagated in the software learning from them, to the danger of creating databases of people with their location, sex, age, political opinions and addresses. We could also the discuss the unfair share of value being distributed to the persons actually doing the code in free software community to the one making money out of it. I am not here to actually talk about this, I do rant against the fact we tabooed any political discussions in computer related field for the sake of « avoiding conflicts », and it is making me uneasy. Because, this is only what people profiting from exploitation and bullying do. Hence, we see here a troubling pattern of free software having structured itself in pyramidal structures (fundations, projects) and borrowing all the bad behaviours of clergymen.

First free software has a huge problem of cult of personality. We see the community worthy only for those who are succeeding and present them like stars. Except for events like FOSDEM that are still better.

But, there has been a trending concern of religious like evangelism with technology. If crypto-scam comes into mind, languages, frameworks, « one best ways » of structuring a project comes into mind.

What I call religious is trying to impose views and brushing aside all polemics. Rust community comes to my mind has a language that seems interesting to learn but which community is so painfully arrogant I don't want to code in that language.

I do code in python, but since it structured itself in an elitist community with actually awesome core developers it has become also quite tough to talk to them.

There is like a sectarist way of getting your contributions being accepted. Since all this people are PhD at least you have to use their language and their « commonly accepted wisdom » are non disputable. They refuse critics too and are driving people not breathing with python in disputable death marches.

Among them were the python3, the asyncio death march that I fearly doubt will result in an outstanding improvement in regard to the effort poured by maintainer, the religion of typing.

But, you hear no one complain. And that's what bugs me the most. Coders at the bottom of the pyramid not endure this shit without complaining, they even seems to accept more shit further.

Like our platforms for collaborating have always been a pain in the ass since sourceforge (the old github) and savannah (the old gitlab). Being a sysadmin I hate installing these tools and maintaining them. The tools for ticketing, documentation, peer reviews, interacting online have had a phenomenal bloat in complexity and death by a one thousand cut of attention sucking and ritualisation. I would even in all fairness command line use of git.

Very few in the community seem to think an actual static website with a few doc, an email and tarballs is an acceptable way of sharing code anymore in our modern days. We all have industrial standards for our projects to help the companies rip off our values better so they don't have to adapt to us.

Hence we face a dilemna : either we spend money we don't have in hosting our own tools to be independent and relieve ourselves of the toxic IT like openBSD hermits or we use their tools that puts on us an overload of administrative tasks that are infuriating.

We are buying a world of « one best ways » by convenience. But this « one best way » is often a forced point of view that is based solely on the point of view of elitist cunts that often come out of bias on the « best way to work and having no fun ». Yep, Free Software has been depleted of fun by trying to prove something, like it's where we craft the best tools, and that's when we enter competition that we forget cooperation and cease to be a caring community.

At one point, all the mass of funding in free software is allocated on fame, because some idiots don't actually believe in the community but the « bests among us ». I won't paste the xkcd dependency referring to internet depending on imageMagick being maintained by an obscure one man army in nebraska since 2003 but it pretty much highlight the problem. The fairest way of solving the growing fragility of free software supply chain and dependency would be to ensure ALL humanity has decent wages and enough time for hobbies without distinction of birth, sex, religion, origin, countries, but funnily enough most free software coders I know are ferociously more anti unionist and anything that is close to a society where wealth is shared than the average joe.

I know how it is gonna ends up very soon : with the recession coming, the « great depression » and possibly an internet bubble explosion the mental health of most precarious maintainers and benevolent is gonna be sucked dry. The only sectors that are gonna still pay are organized crime. The acceptable one called government, and the more shady ones relying on scamming the vulnerable ones.

Once out of the keyboard world all this free time spent cut from their local communities and building « real world » skills will leave former free software contributors on the pavement like decaying useless turds with depression.

They will be all the more depressed then they will discover computers prevent us from buying actual reliable production goods. There is a computer with pig coded software everywhere that is brittle that replaced almost all appliance. Even fucking ovens. And we cannot fix them, because by listening to the idiots of « the ARM/USB/IEEE XXXX/ISO/ANSI/W3C/(put any language, platform, cloudish idiocy, framework or OS here)/ is the one best way, », we are cornering ourselves in a world where if you don't have money and comprehension and possession of an outstanding range of hardware equipment and tools we are driven away from even the most trivial hardware manipulation with a computer.

We have basically by denying ourselves the right to be free and raise our concerns helped to build a future in which the skills we honeyed are gonna be useless and we are gonna be powerless.

Diversity matters, but not the one of displaying pictures with blue, yellow, short or tall humans. The real diversity in a community is the social diversity. And since well educated with good intentions took over the playfield of free software ideologically, technically, economically and in public influence, it had become a dystopian aristocratic orwellian nightmare.

The inertia is such I don't believe the tendency will curb any time soon. But, in my new life out of this community I learned to not make the same mistakes again.

First I went back to coding, but only for fun. And I discovered the interesting code for companies has to be boring to use and create. Like confined (github) which basically is a research on how to do a « safe eval » templating language.

Well, no for, no while, no goto, no function, no access to file or hardware, memory, boring binary coded decimal that are harder to use than float an int. You only have a stack to work with and limited number of cycles, limited stack, limited string size. I think I will stop there, because it is not the language I want to build for my daughter to learn computer programming. Fun is inherently unsafe. So I will probably build a new toy forth like uxn forth. Forth are really easy to make into a language.

Secondly, I discovered it is actually faster to have a result in rushing like a boar. Coding requires focus. Our modern tools and ritual of doing stuff the « one best way » (including, CI, tests, docs, trying to gate fame/attentions/recognition) perturbs our precious focus.

Once you are focused you rediscover the pleasure of getting things done and working. You even achieve results better than the one you envision you could, and it is often by not « following the one best way ». For the fun I installed prompt_toolkit which is a very complete framework for doing command line utility, but I soon discovered I was best done hacking an history saving manually than using there most complete solution. Dependencies are not a problem of creating a weakness and sucking 20 times your code size in dependency for a luxury, they also suck you in a mindset that can conflict with yours that is often your actual best tool at hand.

Lastly by attacking problems that I was told were too complex to be done correctly without using a framework, I discovered that our foundations are more than questionable, often because of aggregated layers of conservatism called necessary progresses crusted in all our full stack from the hardware up to the languages. I am even more and more convinced we should have a talk about unicode, integers and floats, documents, files and the utility of cryptography (except for ssh). All these solutions rose often from brilliant mind having maybe solved the wrong problem and half knowledgeable people being persistent (because money matters) and famous enough  to not only built them but forced their adoptions. This cult of personality that bloats the software world is the same as the one in the real world, at one point. And if it basically destroyed the « virtual » community, it destroys the real world in the same way. I got rid of my « impostor syndrome » by forgetting my ego, and rejecting trying to be a member of a community which values I don't recognize anymore as welcoming (except maybe BSD communities that are a different bunch even in real life and the only one I still frequent).

My final thought is that it is weird that by becoming bigger and valuating so much personal achievement, we have actually destroyed what made communities interesting : ourselves, selfishly. Because when you dilute yourself in the « one best way » of doing progress you actually lose your originality which makes you an interesting asset to the community. You don't need to shine, or be famous to be an asset. You just need to enjoy and have fun not fulfilling the greedy needs of foreigners who don't care, but sometimes you, your family and friends with small improvements. We have lost the sense of helping trivially. I do long for the community computer club were people from all ages and background would gather in a crappy community room to crack games exchange the cheat codes, try to repair old stuffs, help with installing the dreadful printer, experiment, assist others in beginning to code in assembly, solder to replace a burnt condensator...

Oh, I really miss it, and I checked google, according to it there is not a single one in my half a million inhabitant city except in the « MIT » and « oxbridge » like places near me where you guessed I won't set a foot and meet the toxic bros of higher education.

Everything wrong with the Republic (the book and the government)

So here it comes again.

After decades of confusion between democracy and Republic, Trump's team is pushing the word Republic over "representative democracy".
Spoiler : representative democracy is just the middle step from shifting from democracy to Republic.

I have been told: yes in the old days it mattered, but for the same reason it does not matter that liberal are in total opposition with the historical movement of liberalism we should not care. Republic and democracy are kif kif bourricot.

I dare oppose.

The Republic was primarily the first campaign of fake news pushed by wealthy persons to destabilize a democracy. None other than the first one : Athens.

Context: in order to have a truly representative government Athens had evolved toward non (too) biased random picking of its representatives. It was forbidden to refuse being picked up.

Any statisticians will tell you, given a big enough sample (that does need to be as big as our intuition figures) you can have a representative sample.

Democracy is simply the system most likely to represent the people. There is no way to do better.

Then, people who thought they deserved the power were pissed. They were rich immigrants that fled their country because they thought their local government where taking too much of their money, like french people on Le Plateau in Montréal.

And no one listened to them. So they hired a troll, whom they invited to their banquets to amuse them, and convince him into spreading their ideas. We owe them the paros library, but also all the techniques for arguing without logic : the fallacies.

Seeing he was gifted in bullshitting the people they invested him with a mission: find a way to promote a system to favour the happy few that were rich and denied to rule the country in regard to their success.

So The Republic was written. It advocates: censorship based on religion, mass control and denying privacy, breeding citizens like animals to make them stronger (eugenism), and a cast society based on people, guardians and the wisest among us.

The guardians are just like a police or an army that are raised to believe they have privileges thanks to their merits. But the book say that convincing random persons will do the job.

The people are you and me, they are bad.

The wise, they are just born wise. Touched by the Finger of God, their success and brightness just prove by itself they are wised. Today it could be any successful actress or business men.

To put it bluntly this book is advocating an aristocracy (being ruled by the best). A college of person coopting their peer to rule the government in the shadow.

Normally, most of you who have followed their humanities must have their blood boiling: it is not what I read or what I was taught it was all about.

Guess what, you probably read it the same way, but decades of brainwashing thanks to the Church have made the education system tell you over wise.

The teaching of this book is delivered in the opposite direction of the book.

Nietzsche made a book on the topic (How to Philosoph with a Hammer)

Basically the priest loved the idea of the Republic, because, all religious persons think they are wiser than the agnostic people that are not wise. And priests are the one who founded the teaching of what they call philosophy.

And well monarchy, tyranny had a conflictual history with Church (popes have been having some forced residence in Chateauneuf du Pape which has left us a great wine). So basically Church not only formalized the fallacies in the livret de Port Royal written by the Jesuites in order to know tricks to convince people, they also took care of teaching thinking the right way. (Artistocles fantasy)

Look, there is not need for Republic if the assumption that people are naturally bad falls. You need Republic, if and only if you can say human are naturally bad.

French revolution did not started in the optic of over throwing monarchy for instance. The first project was to go for a representative monarchy like in the UK. Since nobility and bourgeoisie were leading the revolution and were attached to traditions they were pretty keen to have the best represent the people. Them. So after some murders, the Republic won.

On the other side of the ocean, the americans were fed up with the aristocratic system infeoded to the catholic church so they prefered a more fuzzy system that was closer to a federation of do what the fuck you want. A system that would on the national level though aim at looking representative. The founder father were kind of Republican but sneakily.

However in the XIXth 3 ideologies have been born: liberalism, socialism, communisms.

The 3 of them where assuming the people are naturally good. Hence the need for ruling their birth, privacy, expressions and actions is not required.

Okay, communism and socialism have a small bemol : you may need to educate people to make them good.

In the big picture I totally agree with the optimism on Human Nature, and thus am believing in democracy. Being a fan of pink floyd I totally disagree for the need of education like it is done nowadays. But that is just to clarify my personal bias.

What has to be understood behind the democracy/Republic dialectic is whether or not the government should aim at representing the People or should be given to the best among us.

I am gonna assume that I don't believe in Humanity. Just for the sake of exposing Republic's great weakness.

Who says someone is wise?

Being suddenly pessimistic, some people claim they are the best. People who want to deny me of privacy on the ground I naturally am a criminal, but pretending they have success by being good.

Being a paranoïd pessimistic, I now wonder, wouldn't it be possible, they succeeded because they were crooks? Hence, to trust them I need to be able to have access to their past with a big scrutinity.

The problem with Republic is the wise men are encouraged to live in the shadows.

Which does not make me want to trust them. And the original pamphlet regard any scrutinity to the powerful as being bad.

Seriously?

The Republic in its original exposition and historic implementation is naturally a call for corruption.

I don't want any wisest men to rule me if I can spot how easily it can get corrupted. It can start good, it is bound to end badly. Corruption is the enemy of any government.

And thus, I cannot hold anyone defending Republic as being wise, but much more a crook that want to own my ass with my consent.

I don't have the (self) rape culture: Republic is not for me ; I want democracy.

Just for the record, just after Athen became a Republic it became a tyranny ruled by a few wealthy people that became imperialist, oppressed their own, oppressed they neighbours, went in military campaign to force their advantage in trading agreements, they set the Peloponese on fire and ultimately become the cause of the fall of the greek civilization as a whole.

History have hiccups, reading the paperspace nowadays maybe a good idea to forge your opinion.

I recommend: the Peloponnesian war, The Republic, How to philosoph with a Hammer, The wedding of Figaro, Epicures, The life of Diogene Laerce, The Element of Euclides (this one is about geometry, but I love it).

Moving out: earnings of sweat are earnings of fear

One year ago I was a python coder. I have my pipy packages, and am reasonably competent. I could not find a job in France because they all want PHP/C#/C++ coders with weird proprietary environment or have interviews that I would grade as bullying against which I have been adamant. Sometimes in your life, self esteem matters. So I took the first job I could find because I have no more savings: I am currently a mover. And, I am strangely glad.

Yesterday, I was on the highway with my truck. A 20 cubic meter, with an engine that has hiccups, hardly any breaks, non functioning signals, various signals on the board telling me oil should be changed, lights are not functioning and it was my first time driving this kind of truck.  Unable to direct my rear mirrors to have a clear view of the back.

I was in the middle of an heavy flow of cars,  trying to keep up with my 130km/h speed limit : my extra time on chantier not being paid. The faster I am back, the faster I can see my wife.

While I was inserting myself at maximum authorized speed on the third lane (without signals) a car chose to irrupt from my dead angle with full acceleration at 150km/h. Fuck it was scary. Afterwards a mob of  angry drivers copiously trashed me for having a dangerous behaviour.

People don't get it, I cannot lose my driving license: it is part of my way to earn money, I cannot pay for speed tickets they represents 3 days worth of work. But I don't want to lose time. Because time is life.

I don't live to work, I work to be able to live. I wish not to work 53hr/week and earn more money. I prefer to give up on cars, expensive LCD flat panels, computers, furniture, clothes, smartphones and share more time with my wife.

But, correcting with the effective time I work (14hrs+ per day) I am paid ~5€/hr ~ 7$/hr for being a mover. I sometimes wonder why I don't prefer to go on the social minimum.

I do complain, but this job is fun. I just don't understand why a job that no ones wants to do is way less paid than other jobs. In fact I know, I tried to apply to the other jobs and was cockblocked by the means of various strong arbitrary selections based often of cronyism or weird tests/diplomas/formation that are honestly useless. The job office even proposes for expensive costs for the jobless android formations based on the free IP google delivers. Paratism to the max.

There is normally a formation for being a mover. I did not have it. I learn by doing, watching, asking questions. Colleagues now ask me to work with them. It's rewarding in its way.

I move people with unopened goods still labeled in money that disappeared 15 years ago that worth more than one day work and that I so envy, like a calligraphic sets of fountain pain. I don't steal.

These customers often with level of education similar to mine are scolding us as if there education level gave them an automatic insight on everything. They don't understand the global picture. I am a ripper, I am an ant taking part in a collective intelligence made of preppers (the guy preparing the box), the tetris players (the one stacking efficiently and securely stuff in truck), the unloaders (people preparing balanced sets of boxes for efficient routing). I do small stuffs, like bringing information back and forth, giving status, moving stuff out of the way, cleaning, moving stuff fast without breaking them, doing complex practical 3D geometry with pieces of furniture.

They speak to the movers like shit. I shut my mouth: don't antagonize the customer if you want to be paid. But, for being able to compute scalar product in infinite dimensions, I respect my coworkers. They have a good intuition of geometry, better than most of my former CS colleagues, my now new customers behaving like shits to the commoners. It is funny how people with 80 cubic meters tell me how we are profiting of them while I left Canada with 1 cubic meter selling all my beloved goods on kijiji to be able to make it. Since they have a big contract, they pay less, leaving us less money and hardly tipping. It feels wrong.

On the road, they have these fancy cars, coming back from my rear nearly killing me.

They want to be able to ride over the speed limits, and they horn me, flash me, insult me for trying to get back the fastest possible to my wife with my underpowered and unsafe truck on the road.

But I keep my lane on the road obnoxiously, I do not even try to be nice to them anymore.

I have a life. I don't think of my job anymore when I am back.
My emotions are rollercoasting with the teams I take part. Team work is a weird alchemy. I am part of the mob. I try to support my colleague by untying the knots of causal anger I see forming.

Waking up at 4 am, riding at full speed, eating in 15 minutes working under 34°C moving heavy loads, and this stretched on 14 hours is tiring.

Some people to keep up, like when I was a coder are boozing, smoking, sniffing ...  I try to avoid them, and avoid to give a bad example. I may be supporting the right to alter consciousness, but in the limit of work safety.

I have nothing against this ... except when I work. I maybe making my own booze, I don't booze or even think of smoking drugs on the work. But, my brain understand why people may want to do so. So I don't judge. I try my best to be nice to them, I do what I think my hierarchy was never able to do: I encourage my colleagues all the time when they do positive stuff. Like a stupid anime character in a shounen. I tell them how good they are at their job and that I want them to teach me and help me improve, I sneakily try to make them do the cleaning of the unsafe shitty trucks by initiating it so to help them regain some pride. I only speak of colleagues in their back if I have something good to say about them.

I am experimenting something a sociopath like me never thought possible: social interaction. My weird above the average stamina and pain ignorance makes me compensate by speed what I can't deliver by raw power, I encourage collaboration, because well, I don't have power, so I rely heavily on the others to carry with me, and teach me.

And you know what, my efforts sometimes work. Sometimes I notice an effect.  I see people happy to work on chantier more than they usually are, and sometimes speaking or smiling. I give myself credit for it, but to be honest, it may be delusion. However, I don't care.

And this is part of what is making my new life worth the sacrifice I made. I finally can live in a world where cooperation matters. Where when work day is over, I will not have to reconnect my computer and work until 1am. Where my boss won't try to steal my inventions.

However, the people we mainly move whose merits are often to be born and have estates are assholes.

When I try to rent a place I am often refused to rent a place for my wife and me because they don't want a couple to leave in ... 25, 32, or even 40 m².

We actually live in 16m² and it is okay. Is it really the owner's moral judgement that should lead my life. The standards of those who owns should really not be pushed down the throats of the modest persons.

I don't need your smartphones, your apps, your internet of shit, your healthy or ready made food, your cars, your expensive bikes, cars, gadget. I just want a decent place to live in, time to spend with my wife and enough money to buy food. My computers are all falling into pieces. It is a matter of months before I might not be able to write on this blog. I don't even know if I will buy a new one.

Oh! And I would like to be respected.

My bike is my only way of moving and I am bored of cars trying to push me out of roads on purpose, or scold me for not using unsafe-slow bike path.

This is an allegory of the world we are living in: the wealthy are just bullies nowadays, whose power of nuisance is enforced by crony politicians through lobbying.

And to add the insult to the insult, I was listening to the radio and had this intellectual writer explained what it meant for him to change life. His book was full of deaths and murders saying how cataclysmic in his fantasies life changing was. It was full of clichés and condescending. And I realize most of you don't know how life is for the people: our «cultural» industry that is heavily sponsored or funded is made not by the people but by a small self designated coterie of pedantic ignorant. French movie will depict the boredom of rich kids leaving in exclusive places most of the time. The life of most of the impoverished population is held a shameful secret or fantasied in irrealistic success stories. Artists can go screw themselves. They look like «small Goebels» flooding the world of a Prozzac©® fairy tale where poor people failed by unwillingness to commit to reasonable social rules.

I see so many self called musicians lacking the burns on their hands due to practice. So many so called intellectual unable to know the difference between christianity and catholicism talking about religion. So many self called leaders scorning their workers constantly instead of helping them improve.

Well, my life is bittersweet right now. I am on the edge of becoming a hobbo.
Was it worth to abruptly fall down the social ladder? Well, I did not choose. My actual boss is the only one that gave me a chance. I have it because be it 4am, 6am and sometimes 7 am I am here ready for the call.

Wealthy people party all night preventing me from sleeping, being rude, but still I stand. Growing a disturbing uneasiness about the fact that at the opposite of the socialists in France I think class struggle did not disappeared but is getting worse.

I am getting very disturbed reading newspapers our elite seems to be totally blind to the real daily life of the common people. All political formation, even Nuit Debout seem out of touch. A silent drift is occurring under my very eyes between the population and the governing elites (administration, elected people, economical elites, artists, journalists) and it does not feel like a good omen. Social diversity is disappearing thus national concord, fueling resentment of the excluded. The first violence  fueling terrorism comes from the deny of reality of the elite.

Me? Well, I will adapt the wheel of chaos. Finding it fun. And enjoying my life with my wife even with the reprobation of the society even if landlords want me to overspend my money in something I don't need, even if bitter workers try to sabotage our works as a kind of revenge on society.

Life may have become tougher, but I love my new life ; I am freer than I was. And since I don't have a messianic wish to take the pain of the world on my shoulder and correct it, I will just take my already heavy enough personal load and move it to better horizon.

Moving out from coding part I: why?

When I was a kid, I had this teacher's husband who taught me one of my greatest thing: what passion and hobby are. He would take us with his wife to ride bike for first small, then long circuits. Riding without competition in mind, but with greater and greater autonomy.

I have made a lot of competitive sports since then however even though I am still riding an average of 100km per weeks I never did it in «sport» context. I can ride 100km in a day with my wife just because I love it and I sometimes ride at 70km/h.

Passion much more than competition is what is empowering. Being free, feeling free. Having the mastering of space (I have quite some autonomy in my legs) and time (I don't rely on anybody for moving) is great. I can ride off road with a road bike, or just swallow kilometers like an idiot.  When there is traffic jam, I ride like an eel in the middle of the city going faster than cars in the roundabouts (~40km/h).

Well, it is dangerous, sometimes people are mad I do not ride on dangerous bike paths to do what is legal: riding on the road. And I literally have to fight to stay on my path.

This is an allegory of my experience so far from moving out of code to my new life ; I am today a mover. I may change career in the future, I may go on, I don't know where it is leading me, but having chosen to ride bike instead of cars, is like a philosophy of life on how to extend your horizon to the maximum with limited means. And I owe it to the man who introduced me to biking.

One day though he was on his 40s (I was ten) I don't know why, he told me that he had one regret in life he wanted to change job. He was tired of this, and he wished me «to have more than one life in his life». And he wished me to live in a time it would be possible. After 6 month of hard work I achieved it. It is possible. Tough, but possible.

30 years later, here I am, having left Canada and back in France in a new place. And I hear the same complaint from people around my actual age: people would like to change job and begin new careers. Security agents bored of static positions, movers wanting to become truck drivers... coders bored of the Internet Of Shit, Java is the new Cobol, Cloud is the new mainframe, PHP/node and the spaghetti code, javascript fatigue, the coded obsolescence, unsecured by laziness  .... there are moments when the friction in your professional practice overtake the drive of passion and Beruf.

Sometimes, leaving a profession, is the way to vote with your feet against what is happening.

You know one of the disheartening things in coding is you know exactly how the world could be better with coding: by making simple stuff, not complex one. I would advocate less feedback loops and coupling, but modern practices are doing the opposite. I do advocate Tcl/Tk to make portable/lasting interfaces, but everyone want smartphone apps that are gonna be obsolete in 5 years. Well, your home boiler may last for 20 years, but when it can be only controlled by an app that may last 5 years doesn't it make old style knobs and virtually unbreakable embedded spartian UI more desirable?

In fact, it is not the language, the tools, the OS that are broken, it is probably the business ; there is no incentive for doing right things since there is no financial or legal responsibility for doing shit. For this business to improve it is required that customers are leveraged to do class actions for the defects in the code and designs. Directions that google, apple, fb, cloud providers, banks, providers for governments are lobbying against.

Most of free software coders are abused, and seems to like it ; their code is used everywhere, but instead of having thanks or recognition they are pressured by pro users who demand free work/consulting.... free software developers are the bitches spat upon by the IT business. The cloud, the apps, the smartphone OS are all heavily relying on free software and for 1 or 2 success stories, there are hundreds of people living in inhuman open spaces where coders are put in batteries like chicken hatching eggs. A lot of free developers I know have experienced depression or heavy burn out (the new name for professional fatigue). Man, hobbyists are having from there hobby professional fatigue. Symptoms that were not existing when corporations where NOT using free software.

We may all have time sheets to fulfill dutifully every days, but true hours are never fulfilled. 50/60 hours work per week happens. If you have free software projects, you will anyway have more time thinking of your job, because your projects are probably related to your work. Coding is a becoming permanent mind cage. What should be making you a valuable craftsman : the capacity to create your own tools, is turned against you.

A good coder is a rested coder. A free software developer that want to keep the copyright on his creation MUST work after hours. But company do not want to pay for less hours per week at the same price and thus, to keep up doing their job by building their tools AND keeping property of their inventions they have to work extra. Well, I am a good coder because I can crafts MY tools, and I want to keep ownership of MY tools. Because without them I can't code anymore. So if you want me, take me with MY tools, and give me time to stay a good craftsman by having sometime sharpening my tools.

Micro management has become the norm, thanks to agile. The grotesque of a ritual pretending to empower the coder, is just a masquerade of pseudo equality. Coders have feedback from customers from a long chain of specialists that knows nothing neither from their customer's business nor from coding. Each level of indirection noising the signal. And, like in every job nowadays, every person instantly after having powering on their first computer feels like he is an expert in coding. Don't worry, every customers when I move do the same.

Me, I desire a closer integration between simple electronics and software. I want pin with well known value triggering well known behaviour. A simple default UI, and a way for customers to plug in a servo control using a parallel interface. I want the opposite of actual direction in computer integration. I want any users to be able to program and understand their hardware and software. I want to help users by discarding the cloud of obfuscation between them and the hardware they own. I know how to achieve it. But business practices are in the way : you may think the actual coding mess is due to a smart way to create monopoly achieved by lock in with smart coupling, but there is no conspiracy. Just pure «expert effect» that has contaminated every place in our societies. People are Internet smart. They read 2/3 articles to get an informed choice before doing everything, they have got very good articles from man of the crafts and they master a good intuition. But they are not crafts smart, it is the details that are important. But internet smart people tends to know thinks better then you without having done it repetitively.

This is my experience as a new pretty inexperienced mover. I deny any deep professional skills. I just follow the experience of the 10+ years of experienced movers that are teaching me and explaining. These people are smart. What they say makes sense, it is causes and consequences relationship between an action and there results. Once you learn them you stick to them because it makes sense.

When we fold our «couvrante» (blanket used to cover things) our customers thinks we do it to make them pay more. Well we fold our blanket to not have them in the way and clean our work space to be safe and more efficient. And folding while doing the job, makes the truck ready for next day without losing 1 extra hour at the end of tiring days. It is both work safety and optimization.

Every job is about having a clean usable workspace that will not trigger accidents and optimize the flow. When we take time prepping and trying to balance the weight in our boxes to maximize the throughput. Too light there are stupidly wasting volume (hence useful load in truck), too heavy they break the back of the movers.

A movers job is mainly about prepping.

When we write the description of the cardbox on the top, customers feel entitled to say it is the wrong place. For some we should write on 6 faces, and so on.This internet smartness is all the more touchable when you are a mover. Every customers are feeling entitled to club you in the head from their smartness proving you are wrong with all the weight of their education.

As if education was about being arrogant delusive self confident assertive bastard. It is as if the power given by having education was more important than the knowledge.  The more someone feels educated, the more you get criticized quasi systematically wrongly through the lens of solid belief on self certitude. Making your job correctly expose you to all the more critics. We enable at repsonsibility level self righteous people, full of certainties. Doubts are unprofessional. Well, I have seen a lot of persons coming to me in coworking spaces full of wannabe startups to propose me to do free consulting. Startups love free consultants. They often had a wonderful idea with 95% ready and they needed a «stupid» point in the last 5%.

Always, the 5% that would be underpaid benign features since interface were there and a POC was working in a simple case.

It was fun because even simple RSS scrapers (that were seeming anecdotic) where revealing a failure in the keystones of their project. A physical, coding or mathematical impossibility.

When I said free consulting, it is because they would always propose you a small contract (5 days at 100$ x 8 hours) to in fact made you write on a paper what was wrong when you discarded the contract.

In game strategy : either you take an obviously underpaid contract but will have money or you lose time to say you refuse and give important insight to the startup that in both ways win. Since the company relies heavily on a flawed concept, they need to keep the illusion of the product working, so you cannot be hired, or if you are hired, you have to go in the right direction.

Right direction is the investors believing you can deliver something that works. The market is not based on satisfying customer"s needs, it is based on conning investors and banks to make some bonimentors being able to retire after having built Hollywood kind of houses. Lies valued on the market of your retirements plan in the form of an index in a random stock. Yes you pay for this with every private investment you are making. Your savings is invested in scams. Middle term scams that actually cannot yield profits. But coders like monkeys behind the scene, like a dwarf in an automata pretending to play chess, are patching behind the scene a decorum so that it looks like on the commercial pictures. Manually inserted SQL code at some crucial times of days to walk around a «bug» that is just reflecting the fact the feature does not exists.

A good professional manager is certain the product can be built.

As a coder we are pretending to build solid castles but truth is we build card houses. Every one is losing.

And to get paid as a mover you have to avoid antagonizing the one who pays. You must look your feet. Even if what you are told makes no sens. Else you may loose the «bonus» for having worked 20 «free» extra hours (paid normally 10€/hr) at the wonderful price of 1€/hr. And wealthy people feels very generous. While they cock block you from being efficient by getting in your way when you work... do it this way, you are too slow, you are an idiot...

And some of these people that are very educated are probably doing the same at their work.

I moved away from coding to be mover so that I may have escaped these assholes. Actually, it does not works the way I expected. I expected my bitterness to disappear and begin an new simple life without thinking. I expected I would pull the Interet/coding plug and not care to get control of my life without thinking about what was wrong. And fact bitterness has  disappeared. I am not bitter anymore.

It might seems stupid, but I like being an humiliated mover. I am no masochist. After changing country, then social position, it is like opening my mind, like you finally discover the map in 3 dimension instead of 2.

You see new more interesting mechanics. Important patterns.

Like what is being a professional? And what are the limits of our crafts.

Every jobs require specific knowledge but they have in common one thing: having a clean work-space.

Movers folding their blankets. Demolition workers constantly removing stuff to the trashes and cleaning at the end for the chantier. Cook keeping their table constantly clean.

We as coders are rushing our code in production nowadays. We all have given up on «clean» code.

A clean code is small, with few dependencies, configuration items, requirements, complexity.... Yet computer software/hardware are growing in complexity.

Like incompetent customers -that despise prepping and blanket folding and see our job of mover as moving heavy loads- all the industry is focused on the writing of lines of codes.

We have masquerade of cleaning. Ticketing systems, dev-staging-production environment, tests ...

But they are not. Just a mimicking of cleaning. Just like people first cleaning the floor and then cleaning their walls not seeing that their floor is still dusty.

I am not insane to criticize the actual IT industry and walk away from it even if I am making far less money and work in funky conditions.

It is building resolve and confidence : something is wrong with the world today. The power to command is given to the wrong persons : educated one.

Education is the biggest bubble right now: it does not work and we pay a fucking heavy price for it and it is fucking with the brain of their owners to make them idiot. It is manipulating people into a rigid attitude of exclusive ordering or obeying based on self confidence. Leaders are raised to be professional bullies.

Our society over-evaluates an education delivering pseudo-smart knowledge. If education was delivering anything there should be actual figures proving that the diploma they deliver are impacting positively society. That for a same job diploma matters. Actually diploma are used as a corporative tool to protect access to some professions. Investors will probably require you have an MBA. MBA may gives you profound insights of a craftsman of running a business, but it does not worth having made a series of business yourself. Yet if you cannot pay 35k$ / year you hardly can have investment.

Education does not teach the craftsman and diploma are favoring the one who have the confidence not the skills. And too much self confidence conflicts with skills. We give more power to the one who are born wealthy. That's all.

It is time we look at the costs of our universities that cannot make reproducible science, at our industries our education and think once again how to make an education that improves our lives as a whole.

Well IT industry is fucked, like all the industry today... I just now just hope for the bubble on education, in IT, and the stock market to blow up so that it comes back to survival to the fittest kind of market.

I wish to get my power back by being able to produce and sell my services or product without the barrier of false education. I wish to live in a truly liberal state where skills matter more than birth and the capacity to get formations.

I wish I could make the government do what I wish with the taxes we pay, and not fuel financial bubbles by borrowing money to banks.

I wish I was leaving in a democracy not a Republic that is just an aristocracy by birth disguised as a pseudo elitist meritocratic system.

Diploma are void of power on me. I will look at what you do and not what you say, and will go my way full of doubts and resolves.

The social cumulative Ponzi scheme behind our society

Imagine a world that does not exist. An utopia. No a board game. Let's gamify life and make you able to build either a dystopia or an utopia.

People work to prove things like they are the best and get a reward according to rules, and the competition is fair through market/rules, hence the best issues happens to the society.

Market can be regulated (socialism) or regulated (liberalism). (no typo here, a market requires perfect symmetry of information for the buyers whatever the market, hence a regulation either by normalization (liberalism: IEEE, IETF, ISO, CE) or by institutions (socialism: FDA, SEC, FCC)) and often both. Social liberalism is the norm almost everywhere nowadays. So we have a kind of regulation based model, hence we can gamify it.

A real market works better if people learn to learn from feedbacks. Which at my experience happens after you fail your first business. Natural first time winner in business get blinded easily. Failing is very important to learn. Like heroin amazing first shot seems to be the curse of every former heroin addict : the kiss of death.  The problem with life, is you have only one. So a game could be cool if it taught you about the effect of your actions without having to actually do it. Just like a flight simulator but for life.

Failing costs money. You need to invest either in education, or culture, or experimentation, resources, or luck  to be even authorized to fail. You need money to live, and there is no unlimited credits. (kof kof, except if you borrow money that doesn't exist from the future and enslave your kids to pay your debts, (kof, kof))

If we were to model what makes a successful business man, we would have to randomly pickup a factor for the remuneration of success apart from the intrinsic quality to ship an ideal product which is fucking luck. Something randomly picked but deterministic. The inner talent. The random capacity at being good at something. And also a random context that deterministicly biases the expression of the talent. The conjunction of talent and opportunity modeled by 2 main equally random variables that are not coupled initially.

You see, here in Montréal in café concert, the music is awesome from garage band. In France shitty music makes it to the top. I mean, they work there instruments. They are more often in bars to play music than to brag about playing music.

Why aren't "better" musicians not making it to the top? Because they don't have access to the market the same way... I would say randomly. Why are the french musician so shitty? Maybe because they lack of competition based on objective skills but on random property (being born there).

How would you explain that market can reach local dysfunctional optimum with objective measure of better.

You thus have to make a model based on partly predictable success based on skills and a random part based on all the dimensions we cannot control. Basically success in business is determined by action influencing the outcome of a random dice.  Just like a stupid dice roll at D&D. Basically I claim real life can be modeled as a MMORPG based on random characteristics.

So let's try to play this game with dices and a board.

Every player on the market would be given sets of random properties : age, culture, sex, geography, family history, INT, STR.... and a proficiency skill (a generator of production) that would express the intrinsic objective genius of the person. And its contextual luck bias. Talent could be expressed as the speed at which it can generate capital per "fixed turn". Like a gifted musician can produce a good song ten times faster than another one, and in dysfunctional culture (so it has to be updated according to the context) one hundred times faster. And a good musician may be a good sound engineer, and probably better than a randomly deaf person.

The context is the place, the time, the age of the players, and the biases. It changes all the values of genius deterministicly by influencing your probability of sucess per dice trhows. But intrinsic genius growth would tend to be kind of chaotic according to the initial conditions. It is your capacity to generate HP.

Then, there would have to be Hit Points or ... Capital. At 0, you don't play anymore and you are condemned to watch the game until the end, helplessly unless the other players decide otherwise, by transferring HP. Every transfers has at least a fixed cost.

The game would begin by choosing an hidden card taken randomly called "life goals" taken from a pile randomly specifically tailored dream according to your context. The most common being I want to live a life that favours me. It is called competition. Others would be, I wake up being mere theresa ... Cooperation. And Others would be I just want to play because I am there, and it could be fun. Or I don't care about the game, just leave me alone, games are BORING. In fact it would be not a card. But the reality.

You could with enough point in the game actually buy the card to leave the board game you had been forced into.

The problem in this game, is that people cannot chose and they are forced into it because of the 0 limit also called poverty. They can be sided. And it is not a game, it is a social experiment on the submission to the authority of the rule. Like Milgram and the SF prison experiments, but on our submission to our own culture.

Actually nothing prevents the hostage of flipping the board and say fuck you. Nothing prevents the over player to stop the pain of the game and go take a pizza.

But, if I was to make this game I would make it painfully realtime slow. Like you need 7min to cover any year after the starting point. And it requires hours before you can roll the dices triggered by decisions taken years before.

I would also enable people favoured by luck to be able to rig the game to make it funnier. You could even invest in tweaking luck in your favour.

Like education could grow your revealed genius (which expresses the efficiency of your genius according to a context). You could buy extra turns like going in schools with influential future business man to higher the probability of rolling dices in the section finding an investor. You would level up faster by buying DLC bonus.

You see, this kind of late game advantage based on amplification of small increase of stats is exactly like leagues of legend. Ask any players, it is part of the game to choose wisely and to use this to reinforce your natural skills. And cumulative effects are awesome. Even if there are based on random events (like you being better at farming then your opponent, or your kill ratio).

You could also influence on global variables on the side of the board that would be random stuff. Like sex discrimination, fashion, the positive or negative impact of culture on the access to market according to your context. Like a clever LoL player.

Now, imagine you have a second sets of guinea pig spawning randomly in the middle of the party to relieve the players. We will call them kids.

They can share with less friction in HP. They cab transfer HP with members of their family. By either solidarity or theft. People could decide to throw dice for either transfering or stealing money.

Family is anything the random game would find the most probable according to your context. Even a carpenter could be the father of a son that is not his. Still actions are always taken by random dices on predetermined success table varying with your initial random throw. But now you can influence it within game negotiations.

But, the wealthiest characters at some point of the game have more probability to change the game thanks to the accumulation of advantage according to time.

So you see, I have played enough monopoly and diplomacy game to know what this game would do without even DLC.

It would make every one throw at each others throats very fast.

Okay what are the irritating effects in this gameplay?

There obviously a social pressure for playing games. And some people sure have a lot of fun.

But with less capital in game initially, you know you will play less in real life. IT IS BORING.

The reason to be bored? Random luck at initial dice throw to chose your characteristics determine your ability to play.  And the newest players are guaranteed to have less luck than the first generation. People enter the games with substantially less luck to eventually play the games but are  forced to stay at a table event as painfully boring as a family dinner where everybody else have fun but you without having the right to open your mouth.

And at the beginning of the game it is fun. You can make a self taught kids from a shanty town wins the game against a king. The fun in games is about going against the destiny. It is funnier to win when you came in unfavorable position. And that what are all entrepreneurship story telling about. Winning against the odd. Proving by good choices you can influence the outcome in your favour. It is a positive self boosting ego game of competition. And competition is sure fun.

But,  this game will cumulatively force more bored players to be inactive at the side of the tables while the rules get increasingly in their clear disadvantage.  The more the game will evolve, the less the capacity of incoming late players will be driven by nothing else than luck, thanks to the mechanism of frictionless propagation  of the HP between families.

One of the winning strategy is of course when you are still playing and in capacity of influencing luck (genius with poor initial characteritic or the opposite) to make gaming alliance based on extending the notions of family and trading your genius for luck, or luck for having a genius.

Hence creating factions based on common characteristics : gender, age, nation of birth, of location, religion, random background point... And you create a coupling with luck and genius. Late player game will have their initial luck being overly amplified and your genius factor will be useless. The only thing that will matter will be the diplomacy game you are forced out because of lack of HP.

And at one point, like in diplomacy you do know that to make the new family emerge, you have to prepare privacy and the possibility to make alliances that might include theft of your own "initial" family to inherit characteristic from a new blended family. Yeah, betrayal is being more and more incentived and exacerbated over time. They are game incentives to betray more in frequency and amplitude over time.

You could imagine a whole generation of post war conflicting families (the liberal and socialist) deciding to base the payment of retirement at the detriment of their own kids. And then their kids by weired propagation of consequences having to betray them later (in a its you or its me fashion).

You could imagine a lot things. Those who played diplomacy knows how this kind of games destroys friendship ans solidarity in real life.

So the more the games will evolve, the less fun there will be for a vast majority. But for the one still in competition the game would become more intense and fun. And betrayal will become more common. And some people will grind their teeth preparing to betray in order to play a little. Higher betrayal for smaller gains.

There will be players forced to stay hours without even given the opportunity to play a turn.  Just because of a random initial choice. And attentive observers will notice that the game will be changing the players rationality in real life.

So you see, sometimes, the problem is not about the players, nor about the game itself.

It is about getting lost in the game and not thinking about the effect not on the personae incarnated but on the human forced to play this game.

 The more this competitive game evolve, the funnier it is and more intense... for less and less players.

I think time is the accident of the accident. And that some people have less time in their life because they are prevented to play the game of life. Because they are at the side of the table seeing people having fun and being prevented to run at the outside whatever kind of other games they may wish to play. It is not the game that is bad. It is forcing in pretending to love this game. Life is the result of our meaningful actions. By not letting people play the game of life, people are denied life. Randomly.
And I think an actual games based on our actual world would prove any hardcore players that it is not gaming that sux, it is the rules we make and how we are loosing the fun of a tad of competition.

It is not how we play nicely a shitty game that can bend this game, it is is in thinking we are forced to play this game in the first place. The game can be either influenced from the inside and it can be fun, but also, you should also be given the right to not play a game. And we should remember we get modified either positively (3D orientation) or negatively (???) by games. They can effect us.

However we could avoid the systematical cumulative boringness of the game by removing the amplification of randomness over time. Pure lottery is not a fun game to play when you have no tickets a glass of water and are forced to see people having super prices, wines and meal while you are forced to stay hearing boring discussions about how the game is fun by tweaking on small diminishing part of talent.

Basically, private property and inheritance should be capped at an acceptable level of randomness. Because a too deterministic game would be boring too.

I think we could teach a lot by making a board game for all kids in the world that would help them understand a good model of their life to come. GURPS and the creator of diplomacy are my two objective choices with Gary Gigax for this task. Just to be sure to have unicorns and troll eventually and some dragons.

Not only to depress them a tad, but also to give them hope in understanding how that they can rig the rules to increase the maximum fun for every players in and out of the games. I think that teaching kids a game that result in improving the game, teaching them how randomness and potential can influence future could be a good idea. Teaching them about the boredom of arbitrary world based on purely deterministic rules does not make funny games nor the equally boring world of pure randomness. There has to be a balance in the rules. But a constant for all kids' heart : it is funnier sharing the fun. It is a kind of a way modeling in physics, we just imagine something and validate it could work by reproducing in experiments and checking with the real world. Game should help in testing life's choice.

I say to everyone that people should accept the intrinsic unfairness of the randomness of the world as a given. We should value it. We should just maybe think of controlling it a way that makes it funnier for every players. We should accept for the sake of fun a part of symbolic limited randomness in socially randomly fixed competition where everyone could shine based on their random "talents". Like a nice free kermess for kids or a mario party where you could always choose not to play.

We could make a better society if we remembered the fun we had playing games as kids, and what it means having fun together.

Without regard for genius or randomness. A game where even the unluckiest would have fun.

But nowadays, the game board is increasingly boring for most of the players except a few  one chosen by luck reducing the numbers of players more every turn.

1+1 = 0[2]+carry : C addition are wrong (hence 99% of our language)

Basically I say that the syntax

a = x + y;

reveals a profound misunderstanding of what an adder is inside a CPU.

a = x + y maps to an Aristolecian Natural integer ideal addition while CPU works in an anneal but with 2ce the size you think.

An adder is a series of bit level adder. The sum of x + y for any bit is the result of bit level adder piped in together through the propagation of a carry bit.

Hence for an addition at the bit level 1 + 1 has a sum of 0 and a carry of 1 is propagated.

1 + 1 = 0 .... + 1

We copy paste them in a pipeline of propagation and know we have a full adder with one extra carry flag being set. Flag C ignores.

It just that you have an exact result on n+1 bits but it would ruin the compiler shortcuts if you took that into account. Memory is padded on n bits. So if you intend to to do the calculus AND store in a a set of atomic instructions then having to extend the available memory on the fly is a little tricky.

C wisely has decided that resources are bounded thus x + y  should always fit in something of the size of the operands.

After all a one cycle ASM addition can be seen exactly as :
  • exact integer adder telling you when you exceeded your capacity;
  • an exact addition that has an extra bit of information that waits for treatment.

Yes, addition can be even considered synchronuously or asynchronuously.

Since the carry indicates the event (unsigned context) and since the carry indicates and extention why not have :

promotion, a = x + y

Dyslexic rant (goto end of rant for the impatient)

or
x + y => a, promotion

I am dyslexic and latin reader.
The a = x + y has always pissed me off.

I read from left ro right, right?
a is set AFTER the addition. So causality is from right to left, right?

What is left? I have to swap directions of causality all the time.

Plus => is the mathematical notation for implication.

So as an ASM 68K lovers (source destination convention), an aristocrat of coding, a western centric writer I propose that we always favour left to right notation.

It has worked for math let's do it with computer.

I guarantee that if the flow of the syntax follow the flow of the causality compiler will have less bug, parsers will be easier to make, and software more efficient. A concept in a flow should appear after the necessary context for its creation.

A  = new Object( data )

is also stupid.

data Object.new ) => A

would proove smarter. You would read a stack being filled from left to right and some reserved words map to operator like call ")" or MOV "=>" and for once the flow of reading would map the control flow inside the CPU

End of Rant

There is still a problem. In ASM you cannot test the carry flag and set it atomically. But you can do a branch on whatever the good status flag (goto after on promote if no carry). That can be translated in more intuitive meaning like:

x + y  => a on promotion {
        1 => b

};

Or with dyslexic syntax and more correct variable names:

int lower = 0;
int higher = 0;
lower = x + y  on promote {
    higher = 1;
};

This way overflow in higher language may be not only more correct in terms of meaning and less buggy but also mapping more efficiently to the CPU paradigms.

With compiler we can turn the various meaning of the condition tests in way more convenient meanings according to the context (unsigned/signed ...)... and use more efficiently the out of bound signaling systems left by our wise ancestor electronical engineers in the status flags.

Programmation is stateful. Those who ignore it in their abstractions are bound to do have nasty bugs.

The cloudy future of IT

What is the common point between a computer, a VW diesel, a nuclear plant and me cooking, playing bass or coding?

My question is both what is an amateur and a professional, and why he does matter that knowledge in IT is in a way of death by kludges and complexity that makes it indistinguishable from evil practices of proprietary firms.

Most people when asked about who invented Free/Open Source Sofware (FOSS for convenience) tends to either quote the extrovert knows as Richard Stallman (FSF) or the more invisble K. Thompson and how the first UNIX sources contaminated the sane students of Berkeley where LSD was also developed at the same time (I am sure it is no coincidence).

I strongly disagree. The true genius is Bill Gates in 1976 he crafted the expectation of IP protection. The beauty of the letter to the hobbyist may make me cry a (crocodile) tear. It is the invention of proprietary software, a realm in which the user is denied to understand how things works. But also the right for the computer industry to derogate to any legal and financial obligation in commercial contract.

It is justified by a diffused "pain of the creator stolen by parasits".

My french heart double its speed rate. This music is such an ode to the talk of the Baron de Beaumarchais justifying the need of creating a special kind of protection for the artists. Yeah, poor Baron de Beaumarchais. A noble from the ancien régime smuggling weapons to the USA under Louis XVI, than voting against the privileges, than begging the National Assembly to reinstate privileges for the poor authors.

Göbbels first rules: the bigger the bullshit, the better.

So.

I learnt VHDL, SPICE, MATLAB, Assembly 68K, graph theory, algebrae, electronics, and even how electrons behave in semi conductors . I drew and learnt how to design and program interfaces 20 years ago.  At the Silicium layer.

Nowadays, I am a coder.   And something is bugging me.

I am the kind of person that prefers to keep every evils in their bottles. One of the devil I hate is ignorance. I am a control freak. I think I am professional because that is what differentiate me from an amateur: control of the costs, and their is no control without understanding.

 Let me explain you why I don't believe in self driven cars: because nuclear plants should not be automated.

First it is epistemological: I think that as much the myth of the golem, the mechanical turk, or Galathea's myth, we all have a fascination for creating life. And so far it has always failed. I don't say it will always fail forever. I say that the expectancy to reach a goal = 2 times the period since the beginning of trying. You will check the average of my expectancy will be the exact time of completion.

I love to have tricks to be right. Logical thinking and understanding, having a consistent representation of a problem is a nice trick.

So my first almost tautological argument is I think it will take 2500 more years before human beings are able to create life so that my predictions whatever the topics are always consistent with observable facts. (yes, it is a tad of a fallacy, proof by the self biting snake)

Second and more important. If you are not scared by a market full of liquidities, bubbles and the recession, let's remind a calm talk I had in Paris with Michel Volles.

This guy had been consulted for the automation of nuclear plant, and he strongly advocated against full automation like in japan or in an Airbus.

He says; well software can have bugs. It is better if human are used to do stuff in a semi automatic way (that do not expose them of course) so that they know how to adapt.
Even crude mechanics has got troubles. But when problem comes instead of handling layers of complexity they still know how it works. And you wish that nuclear plant operators control tightly and have a great confidence in themselves more than the software.

Well, France being full of nuclear plants, and having grown up during cold war, I am a little more receptive than average on the topic.

What is the relationship with self driven cars?

At a lower scale than nuclear plant, self driven cars are life threatening. They can reach the kinetic energy of a 75mm round, and gasoil is fucking exothermic and dense in energy.

Let's talk about trust.

Do you trust stuff you don't understand? I don't. In the name of science I nearly killed myself by being clumsy and doing experimentation with either highly energetic electromagnetic beams that if the claims for electromagnetic pollution is true, I am dead or bacteria.

I trusted my books, and people dying stupidly (like Nobel) for my safety. Stupid deaths by over trusting yourself are paving the road of science.

Would car manufacturer lie to you regarding the software they put in their car.

Can you trust Nissan, VW, General Motors to not tamper with the software in their car in a way that could lie?

Oh. You cannot.

And cars are really frightening in terms of potential arm it can do. So what about insurances? Will Lloyds, Munchen Re will accept to cover this risk?

Insurance is the modern license to kill, mathematician providing enough firepower of layers to claim that death was NOT avoidable by the virtue of probable chains of causality covered by obligation of means in the contract. Thus, someone is dead, but you don't go to jail. You pay someone, that will pay the lawyers and the expected claims of victims.

Have you read a software licence?

What is the common point between FOSS and the industry?

They both decline any legal liability concerning the consequence of the use of the software.

java license either went as far as explicitly denying people to use java for medical appliance...

And this is where I think I am having a professional opinion. As long as software industry refuse to see itself bounded by the legal liability of considering that they are responsible of the correct behavior of their product there is a problem.

The more we rely on incorrect stacks that cannot be covered by any insurance or true guaranties it works then the effect of the non predictability rises.

The financial effect is clear: it is not possible to estimate a reasonable insurance cover for software industry in case a self driven cars kills someone. Companies will be liable since they did not do everything possible to guarantee death would be impossible.

Is planning 1 death out of 1 millions instead of 10 000 indiscriminates deaths per year better? Ksss, you have to be a real psychopath to know you are gonna kill 1 to save 9999... Plus, in face of the law you still premeditated death. Why this one? Who gave the software manufacturer the right to chose who are going to die and to live? In the absurd hypothesis they finally achieve self driving cars, I will call out these people has psychopathic murderers anyway.

But you know, I am simple man (yes, Lynnird skynnird shite, I am a tad soft inside, U know?).

I used to tweak anythings in the house and like engines, computers, electric boards, radios, electric pinballs, my bike, cooking ....

And  I learnt. I could understand and control. That maybe one of the reason I love my bike. I don't fear to break anything far from civilization. I can repair almost anything, and predict the worst. I have control. I trust it.

I love cooking, because I did not obsoleted. I love music, because it is all about not caring about the technic and discipline, I loved understanding that the shape and geometry of things on an electronic boards related to their functions or side effects.

There is one domain though that bugs me: it is IT industry.

You see I see a lot of analog organization that have the same constraints  as IT and don't fail:
- entertainment delivers their show on time (creativity, variety in size, competitiveness, heavy requirements/logistic, heavy specifications);
- cooking has incorporated a lot of foreign tastes and technics in the last decades, still, the knowledge are stable, and they don't make customers sign an agreement it will be okay if they die of a food intoxication;
- to survive extreme condition and a slow but steady decrease in quality since decades, people reverted to using the most simple form of bike as used 1 century ago, this is the rise of the fixie;
-  every industry so far is facing technical (financial) debt forcing them to do incorrect things, like the aeronautical industry making their plane inspected in less pushy places. Still, if unluckily an accident were to happen, the industry would feel hurt, and bad. They would feel guilt and empathy for their users.
- computer industry have been consistently over promising and under delivering: who remember the promises of IBM in 1942 to have a mechanical typesetter that would translate without a mistake what you dictate? Me. The ultimate OS where you write once and compile everywhere? .... The standard that will stand the test of time?

No seriously this one piss me off.

Imagine you are a small company that invest in the future. A middle size business.

You buy an expensive automate for doing industry standard metal shaping. Your investment may require 30 years of use. You choose the RIGHT technology: RS232, floppy disk.

Now, 30 years later, all these technology disappear in the name of so called simplification that are the opposite of any simplification.

USB, xmpp, firewire, pci... They solve some picky problem (like dynamic resource allocation of IO and IRQ), but at the cost of levels of indirections, half respected norms half specified ...

I mean, seriously, secured data on an USB drive?

Just to be a USB client, you have to have an insanely complex stack of code and wires on your board. It requires highly privileged access on the computer server side, AND you are on a broadcasted signal, thus every one on the USB ring can spy on you. And thanks to the diminishing quality of capacitors in computer, it could even tap on other signals.

Progress my ass.

Programming low level interface for RS232 bare bone is easier than USB and it involves less proxy.

The limits were not electrics or technical. It just that additionnal graved silicium costs less than a 1$ connector.

And while the psychopathic software/hardware industry pushes for always lower cycle of "progress", real industries having less liquidities on the market (thus less investment) are increasing their cycles for renewing their tools. Including their hardware and software. It is legitimate a windows 3.1 from 1992 can still be running in an airport. Fuck IT industry, wake up!

And how can software industry not collapse of being so far from the real need of the market?

Except the fact it requires to lack a little bit of "economical" lack of empathy, I may hazard that the 2007 crisis is not over and we have bubbles everywhere one of them being in the education and exploding right now.

First things, how do their survive their cash burn rates without tangible proof of their positive impacts on the activity of their customers?

Well, it is called Venture Capitalism. The market is full of cheap money, so they invest irrationally in a market for which regulations are scarce (safety, audit) and where just a minimal return investment is expected. You just want to outperform the very low interest rates of the national bonds.

In regard to the market, IT require very few investments: almost only brain. KPEX = 0. And benefits are rents. It makes projections of expected benefits very easy.

70 years ago there was a war. Brilliant people were called as officers, soldiers, nurses ... And people on battle front tends to die.

The baby boomer that resulted were caught in an aspiration of skilled workers whatever the education was. But the very small differential resulted in huge difference. My father son of a mason that had good grades in primary school was almost guarantied to be a surgeon if he kept up the good works and he did.

The climax of this era is 1968. A lot of things happened this year around the world. A pacific revolution of hopeful hippies that will become sharkiest marketers of the world.

Our parents experienced an artificial situation where education as a social ladder was working because the competition on the market side of the demand was fierce. And strong of their experience, they indebted the 3 next generations in costly heavily subsidized education system (be it private or public). For Europeans it is public debt, USA private debts. And they brainwashed kids around the world with "passe ton bac d'abord... better have your exams if you don't want to end up like this"

The problem is the education has been saturated. And the system has failed in both cases to give an incentive for a fair and square competition. When the market is saturated, the criteria for selection become arbitrary: sex, look, place of birth, age... weirdly enough never costs. Else given both equally talented coders one a black muslim girl and an the other one an ivy league student, you would pick the one you can pay objectively less. Thus, given the discrimination, if the agent on the market of human resources in IT were rational they would pick the cheapest one that is equally talented. Thus the market would always tend towards less discrimination. Which is not the case...

Maybe also, our capitalism may not be able to reform itself for better work organization like toyota. Maybe the revolution of global mass education is hitting right now. And maybe it does not look like the promised land: while the kids of the masses were studying, it seems the kids of the wealthiest were also studying. So, proletarian just became pro-net-arian. Education system does not resorb social inequality it let them unchanged in a shifting world. Like a never ending screw, globally moving, locally invariant. A vast majority of the society have to work for the benefit of in an inharmoniously shared minority.

So every one blindingly force their belief of people in a bubble to the economy. Something of russian doll. Where every bubble has a bubble in it or could lead to bubbles.

- people with diploma expect their remuneration to not reflect the absence of  scarcity of the market;
- capitalism expect people with the knowledge of the financial system to agree on an unfair sharing of the values (people with education can do math and be troubling);
- customers expect things to work and respect education, else it would be unfair they loose 10 years of their life expectancy doing their job for 25% of the wages of coder;
- companies expect by screwing their margins in reaching more customers on a market already depressed it will help them make sustainable profits;
- financial market expect a raise of their dividends while the world is in recession and is betting on a global improvement since 8 years;
- IT seems to not notice that the 40$ / barrel of oil when there is a war close to the biggest producers in the world advocates for thinking very hard in terms of watt per actual watt gained and not flops. As long as we create our thermometer for measuring our efficiency based on how much we efficiently loose CPU cycles, we are dooomed.
- wealthy people expect the collectivity to leave them alone and not demand anything to them in terms of social responsability... while they expect to be granted even more power.

Collectively I am more than concerned. But who am I to claim I am the only person not being crazy? Everybody knows that thinking you are normal is the early signs of paranoid delirium.

Individually, I am beginning to think about opening a shop called "introuvables" specializing in dealing cheap products of quality by making a network of franchise sending each other container with local products: cheap polars/wine vs maple syrup/cheese... Just the introuvables. In some place it will be 1 product, in other 100. A place where to find cheap AND good product according to your market.

Or a restaurant called "la Cantine Luddite". Cheap huge quantity of food with taste that requires hours of preparation and cheap ingredients like boeuf bourguigon, pot au feu, couscous .... and go for serving as in an english pub (collective portions to diminsh costs and collective serving and incitation for people to share). No computer allowed, all smartphones being hacked in permanent DoS with a sophisticated electronic appliance called heavy hammer.

Or a one man show.

You know, I don't care. If it turns that bad, I can still do my show in the street as a living. I'd rather be an happy beggar if events required it than an overstressed soon to die from infarctus modern worker.

I guess feeling confident in your capacity to adapt is a requirement for adaptation.

Yes, the future of IT maybe cloudy, but mine is not.

You still can sing in the rain and lough at clouds.
